Judo is more than learning how to throw someone.

It teaches balance, coordination, discipline, confidence, respect and the ability to remain calm when things don't go according to plan.

Our students learn to fall safely, control their opponents, work through challenges and develop the confidence to keep getting back up.

Our Club

Buzzards Bay Judo & Jiujitsu is a community Judo club with roots going back more than 30 years.

The club was founded in 1995 by Sensei Bob Souza, who built BBJJ around a simple idea: provide quality Judo instruction and create a place where people in the local community could learn, train and grow together.

After Sensei Bob stepped down, the club was passed to Sensei Kevin Radford, who continued that tradition and led BBJJ for many years.  Kevin's dedication to Judo and the people he taught helped carry the club forward and preserve its place in the community.

In 2023, Sensei Jeff Souza returned to the club, beginning the next chapter in BBJJ's story.  Since then, the club has grown its kids and adult programs, welcomed new students, participated in tournaments throughout the region, and continued developing Judoka through Judo's traditional ranking system.

Today, Buzzards Bay Judo and Jiujitsu remains committed to the same values that have guided the club from the beginning: affordable instruction, personal growth, community and a love of Judo.

Our goal isn't simply to produce competitive athletes. We want to create good Judoka and good people.

MORE THAN A MARTIAL ART

Judo's moral code

Courtesy

Courage

Honesty

Honor

Modesty

Respect

Self-Control

Friendship

Jigoro Kano envisioned Judo as more than a system of techniques—it was a way of life. Judo, the "gentle way," teaches us to adapt rather than simply oppose, to use our physical and mental energy wisely, and to help others as we improve ourselves. Kano believed that the principles learned through Judo could extend beyond the dojo and into every part of our lives. At BBJJ, we strive to carry that spirit with us both on the mat and in our community.

These are not simply words we put on a wall.  They are qualities we expect our students to develop both inside and outside the dojo.
